Last month, we celebrated our Big 3-0 with a shiny $30 edition and, while we might have blown out the candles, our celebrations continue with NAIDOC Week by putting the spotlight on First Nations artists who are honouring the old ways with art that’s vital, vibrant and new.
Artists like Girramay, Kuku Yalanji and Yidindji artist Tony Albert, whose lovingly-collected assembly of kitsch Aboriginal souvenirs invites us to consider the past in a new light and our cover star – multimedia artist and Pitjantjatjara “Wonder Woman” Kaylene Whiskey, who throws a sparkly lasso around culture, colour and good cheer.
Also in this edition…
- The Torch – a not-for-profit organisation lighting a path ahead for Aboriginal artists in prison
- Meet You Vendor: Mathok, from Adelaide, who says working for The Big Issue is “much more than just a job”
- A Letter to My Younger Self from iconic singer-drummer for SpiderBait Kram
- Books art feature: An interview with rising literary star Chris Ames
- And LKenny Yong-Soo Son serves up Baechu Jeon (Wombok pancake) in Tastes like home.
