Picking your footy team is a big decision, a life-long commitment. Are you a Pies supporter or a Sea Eagle? (Hopefully, neither!) Melbourne vendor and Richmond Tigers fan Stephen B has long pondered how people pick their footy side. It’s an idea we’ve turned into an edition that celebrates footy tragics, across the codes, across the country.

Plus: writer Helen Garner shares the moment that made her a Western Bulldog; Tim Winton muses on a multi-generational wait for a Freo flag; actor Brendan Cowell devises a new fan chant for his Cronulla Sharks; You Am I’s Tim Rogers reveals his North Melbourne Kangaroos good luck charm. And writer James Colley revels, nervously, in the winning feeling of being a Penrith Panthers supporter.

More highlights in this edition:

    • It’s a beautiful game indeed – meet The Big Issue’s Street Socceroos ahead of their trip to Norway to represent Australia at the Homeless World Cup from 23 August. You can follow the Street Socceroos on their journey on our socials and we’ll also be live streaming every Australian game on our Facebook #Oslo2025HWC #MoreThanAGame
    • Matildas midfielder Katrina Gorry appreciates the small moments as she looks back on her time on and off the football field in her Letter to My Younger Self.
    • New mystery series Playing Gracie Darling is a spooky 90s time capsule. Its star Morgana O’Reilly takes us back to her own encounter with the paranormal.
    • Author Sophie Quick tells us why she loved dabbling in the dubious world of blackmailers, scammers and life coaches in her debut novel The Confidence Woman.
    • Mehak Kansal elevates the humble cheese toastie to something bold, tangy and decadent with her Bombay Cheese Toast in Tastes Like Home.
    • From blackouts to burn outs, we tackle some of the more iconic footy final entertainment shows, Meat Loaf and all, in Ozzities.

Customer photo review of Special 30th Anniversary Edition

The Big Issue 30th Anniversary Edition 763 is choc full of very interesting and informative articles. I particularly liked vendor Marion's pictorial of Melbourne's Queen Victoria Market and the CBD. The next time you see a vendor do them and yourself a favour. Buy a Big Issue magazine.

Special 30th Anniversary Edition

Loved the stories, pictures and content of this magazine issue, thanks!

To Life - Ed#760

I particularly wanted to read the Rose Byrne piece who was featured on the front cover of The Big Issue, Edition 758. But, more importantly I enjoyed many of the other features in this magazine, in particular, the archive piece on Heath Ledger, the inspiring piece from Deborah Lawrie with her letter to her younger self and Shaun Micallef personal discussion on AI. Thank you for serving up such an interesting magazine.

Rose Byrne - Ed#758

I must admit I purchased this edition as my son had an article printed in it. When I was looking for this edition I spoke to one of the lovely sellers in the city and he was so helpful looking to see if the article was in that edition. Since then I have found out a lot more about the Big Issue and how they help disadvantaged Australians to become more independent and I think they are awesome. Overall the magazine is very professionally set out and of course has some great articles. Love reading about the sellers

Come Together Ed#757

I love The Big Issue calendars and have been buying the every year I can since they started. I missed out locally this time so was very happy to be able to buy it online, thereby avoiding a whole year of FOMO

The Big Issue 2025 Calendar

CALENDAR: I love the alternating pages, where month A is a cartoon by Andrew Weldon, and month B is a profile of a Big Issue seller. FICTION EDITION: 12 short stories, including one by Trent Dalton (Boy Swallows Universe)

The Big Issue 2024 Calendar

I ordered online, which took alot longer than my last order & as it appears it was delayed before it arrived recently after about a month?

The Big Issue 2026 Calendar

I've been buying the Big Issue for many years (though not 30). I live in Wollongong, I don't remember seeing a vendor here, but I have often bought a copy when I have to go to Sydney for work. I always enjoy reading it on the train on my way home, as well as feeling good that I have done something to help somebody to help themselves. Love your work, all the best for the next 30 years!

TBH… As a ‘there at the start’ contributor, think it would’ve been good to show some of the ‘early’ editions and people who helped make TBI what it has become… Behind the ‘sellers’ is a lot of pre-production content…
